What is a DOCX File?
DOCX is the default file format for Microsoft Word documents since Office 2007. It replaced the older binary DOC format with an XML-based structure that is more compact, less prone to corruption, and based on the Office Open XML (OOXML) standard — an ISO/IEC-standardized format.
Word documents are the most commonly used format for business correspondence, reports, proposals, and legal documents worldwide. Microsoft Word has over 1 billion users globally, making DOCX one of the most ubiquitous document formats in existence.
The DOCX format stores text, formatting, images, tables, headers, footers, and styles in a compressed XML package. While Microsoft Word is the primary editor, DOCX files can also be opened and edited in Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages, and many other word processors.
